A recent stop (on our trip of never ending stops) had me thinking about a unique kind of memory. One that I want to hold onto forever but fear will slip away. That is the memory of a feeling. Specifically in this case, the feeling of being free in the desert.

Happy Earth Day! Do you know the Flight of the Hummingbird? It's an indigenous parable about doing what you can even though it may seem futile, and has become a metaphor for environmentalism. So Earth Day should be a reminder to just do what YOU can... take a reusable coffee mug, ride the bus, turn off the lights, skip the burger, etc. If you want to learn more about some bigger changes, I found an interactive article on CNN to be surprisingly informative (link in profile, or Google CNN climate change solutions) #earthday #earthday2019 #olympicnationalpark #washingtonstate #washingtonexplored #waterfalls #environment #flightofthehummingbird
Last week we met some great people at our navigation class with @mountaineersorg and one topic of conversation was this amazing place. So I dove back into my archives for #tbt and found this one. I don't think I have ever experienced anything like that day. We started out, literally in the clouds. They were ominously backlit as they rolled over the Continental divide seaming to be fleeing the rising sun beyond. As they came over the ridge we were on, they dissapated, and as the trail led us further from the divide, we looked back to see a disappearing wave fall over the slope. Pretty sureal moment that I will forever hold on to. #glacier #glaciernps #montana #montanamountains
Piling rocks on top of rocks might not be the ticket. Maybe we should admire people the most for living in this jungle without leaving one mark on it. - Barbara Kingsolver, The Lacuna #leavenotrace #washingtoncoast #sunset #sunset_pics #oceansunset

For #internationalwomensday omensday I want to give a shout out to my wife @louisiana.pearl who is actively pursuing her life with intent and passion. A brilliant poet said it better, so take it away Mary Oliver... One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice – though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles. “Mend my life!” each voice cried. But you didn’t stop. You knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though their melancholy was terrible. It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones. But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world, determined to do the only thing you could do – determined to save the only life you could save. #iwd
It's hard to watch a dog get old, Brody has really slowed down over the past few months. But when we get out in the wilderness he springs to life, and for a coupe hours he is a full blown puppy, splashing in the water, bounding up the trail, taking it all in. The recovery is much longer, but we've decided to do our best to give him as many more of these moments as possible. To elect the shorter or easier trail so he can come along. Here's to you old guy 🐶 From me and your momma @louisiana.pearl 👍 #doglover #dogchild #dogsofinstagram #washingtonstateparks #dogstagram
